Dog River Marina | SALTWATER SIGHTS View the Post. Y ou can tell we are getting close to the Gulf – saltwater spray and we can trade in jeans for shorts most days.YEA for warmer weather! The early morning departures are still a must, and it’s usually a coin toss to open our eyes to either fog banks or spectacular sunrises. |

LOCKIN’ AND DOCKIN’ 11-11-11 View the Post. We have made this part of our journey before, and it’s beautiful all the way. Not many side trips this far down the rivers, it’s just time to relax, enjoy the vibrant fall foliage and try not to get too stirred up when the fog doesn’t lift for an early departure, or a tow boat gets into the lock in front of you – both increasing the delay time on an already short (day light savings) boating day. It’s all part of cruising down the Tenn-Tom to Mobile. |

Columbus Marina | 60 more miles and 4 locks- we're whipped from day before plus long travel day today. We're staying for three nights here until after the rains on Wednesday subside. |

Mid-Way Marina | After 60 miles and 3 locks we're tired but drained after discovering and dealing with a short in DC electrical system aft cabin. Melted some wires. Had to cut all at terminal strip in aft head. No power back here until we get it repaired in Seabrook. AC, Heater, washer/dryer on separate systems and work fine. Plug extension into aft utility room to run TV and Bose. All is well. |

| 10-28-11 to 11-3-11 | Chattanooga | ROCK CITY 11-02-11 View the Post. One of my very favorite places in all of our Looper travels turned out to be this amazing spot that Garnet Carter and his wife Frieda had the vision to nurture and preserve for all of us to visit and tour. They began development in the late 1920’s from an original path through their personal estate. Short Movies: INCLINE RAILWAY 11-01-11 View the Post. This adventure is not for the weak at heart. As the ads say, “Experience the thrill of riding America’s most amazing mile as the railcar climbs historic Lookout Mountain.” From the top, you can see Chattanooga and the surrounding mountains and valleys as the incline reaches a breathtaking grade of track at 72.7%! Yipes! It is surely the steepest passenger railway in the world. CHATTANOOGA – AGAIN 10-31-11 View the Post. When we visited Chattanooga a couple of years ago aboard Spirit Dancer, we took in all the sights and restaurants within walking distance of the marina dock – and that was a lot! This time, we left the boat at Joe Wheeler and rented a car for a land trip. We were looking forward to visiting with friends Laurie and Gilbert since they were there for a family fix and a high school reunion as well. The Sheraton Read House Hotel - Among many haunting this historical hotel is Annalisa Netherly in Room 311. The hotel takes the room off the market on halloween. Hmmm. AGLCA SONG FEST 10/26/2011 View the Post. The last wine reception was held, the final awards dinner was consumed, and good-byes were said with many promises to meet on down river, or on the Gulf or in the Bahamas. All in all, this was the BEST rendezvous ever. But not so fast - it’s not over ‘til the Loopers sing! AGLCA RENDEZVOUS 10/24/2011 View the Post. We have been having the best time at the American Great Loop Cruisers Association Rendezvous here at Joe Wheeler State Park. This past week the Looper boats have been coming in by the droves. After almost each Wilson Lock through, 5 – 10 boats come through to dock here at the marina. The 60+ slips are assigned well ahead of time, because the width of each boat is critical in placing the most boats in the given slip spaces. Bob has been helping the boats come in on our dock – a busy job! MISTY MORNINGS AND DAM LOCKS View the Post. Excerpt: "We have moved on down the line, so to speak. Leaving early, we have often waited a bit for locks to fill so we can lock UP the Tennessee River. After our stay at Joe Wheeler, all of the locks we will be going through will lock down. The entire distance to Mobile is 470 miles, through 15 locks and a 341-foot difference in water levels." TENNESSEE RIVER BANKS View the Post. Excerpt: " The banks of the Tennessee River are beautiful to behold. We passed through landscape that formed between 150 and 350 million years ago. When the sunlight hits the shale ledges and gray limestone it looks like something out of a Thomas Kincaid painting - especially this time of year when the trees are “considering” bursting out in fall colors." |

Birdsong Marina | FOG AND FRESHWATER PEARLS View the post. Excerpt: "We left Leatherwood Marina before the fog got so thick we couldn’t see the marks to get out. It was a bit better once we got out to the river; however, seeing the bridge and abandoned building suddenly appear on the lake was a little eerie to say the least!" |
