Grand Canyon

Cameron Trading Post - A landmark not to be missed.

Traveling north toward the east rim go past your westerly turn on highway 64 for about a mile and you arrive at the Cameron Trading Post store, cafe and museum. That's me standing in front of the original store. The new store is 20 time larger.

You can spend hours and lots of $$$. Incredible craftsmanship. Bob bought a flute and a music composition with the title: Sioux Spirit Dancer.

Grand Canyon – Humbling Experience

What a humbling experience! The Grand Canyon is 277 river-miles long, an average of ten miles wide and nearly one mile deep! We drove to the south rim and spent the night – best of both worlds, sunset and sunrise.

The “humbling experience” I refer to was paying for the Park Pass and realizing that I qualified for a Senior Pass! I almost demanded to turn around and go back to Sedona, where I was intuitive and compatible… Age does have its benefits though; I can use my new pass the rest of my life at any National Park!

El Tovar – A Grand Old Hotel

When the Santa Fe Railroad first reached the Grand Canyon, construction was immediately begun on a first class hotel to accommodate travelers.

Built of native boulders and pine, the majestic, 100 room hotel opened January 14, 1905. It is truly a grand hotel and although has been modernized to meet current “picky traveler” demands, it is still regal and one of the great hotels of its era.

Mary Colter – She broke the Glass Ceiling in 1900!

In an era when architecture was completely dominated by men, Mary Jane Colter was an architectural pioneer. She molded her structures into the landscape and recreated the rustic style of the Southwest’s earliest inhabitants.

Among the many other structures of her design at the Grand Canyon, she designed the Hopi House, located near the El Tovar Hotel. It was built by Hopi craftsmen and is still operated as a gift shop.

She also designed the tower on the East rim.

Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff

Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff – A Dinosaur?
OK – Who knew that they recently uncovered a one-ton Therizonosaur – and it’s in Flagstaff Arizona? We do.

Actually, it was a great exhibit along with all of the other great “finds” in the museum.

The MNA is not to be missed on a trip to or through Flagstaff. I actually gave up shopping for jewelry for this – and it was worth it.
