Dickens on the Strand - Galveston Texas December 1-2, 2007 |
|
We were there to welcome in the 34th annual Dickens on the Strand festival, sponsored by the Galveston Historical Foundation. The festival takes you back to the Victorian era with London inspired food, three parades featuring Queen Victoria and her court, and continuous entertainment on six stages, including carolers, hand bell choirs and bagpipers. We managed to reserve a slip at Pier 21, just steps away from Willie G’s and next door to the “London Wharf” (or the Texas Seaport Museum) and the Elissa, the tall ship of Texas. |

Dickens on the Strand has welcomed representatives from five generations of the Dickens’ family, including two of Dickens’ great grandsons. For the last several years, great-great grandson Mark Charles Dickens has made the trip to Galveston. Henry Dickens Hawksley, another great-great grandson of Charles Dickens and a trustee of the Charles Dickens Museum in London, visited the festival this year for the first time to autograph copies of Charles Dickens books. |
