Moody Garden "Anchor Out" Cruise

July 7 & 8, 2007

LYC Cruise to Moody Gardens was cancelled due to the ongoing thunderstorms. Our original plans called for us to get underway Friday the 6th but with the incredible storms blowing through we decided to go to the club for the "New Member Mixer" instead.

Saturday morning we had breakfast at the club and based on the best weather synopsis we decided we had a large window of clear sky opportunity to go to Offatt's Bayou to anchor off Moody Gardens.

The water leaving Kemah Boardwalk was like glass. We have never seen it this flat and smooth. We made the first ripple in the water with our bow.

Smooth cruise to Offatt's Bayou. We selected an anchoring spot West and North of Moody Gardens' docks. Contacted the Colonel riverboat (Moody Garden tour boat) to make sure we were out of her cruise path. She said there was plenty of water and we were fine.

Beautiful sunny afternoon, great dinner, wonderful offshore lightening storm, we got a sprinkle and a little wind but the Super Max anchor held fast (barely tugged on the 200 foot of 3/8's inch chain we had laid down.

Sunshine. What a rare treat.
Kem at the helm as Bob gets ready to wash the mud off the anchor chain as it comes up

Kem brings the boat around to face the anchor buoy (yellow ball forward the boat). This buoy is attached to the anchor and indicates it's location.

We had a wind shift just after setting the anchor and letting out 200 foot of chain so that the buoy was either to the side of us or behind us most of the time.

Offatt's Bayou has a mud bottom. This oozy mess has to be washed off the anchor before it goes below in the anchor chain locker located just forward of the guest stateroom.
